How can I keep red roses nice and fresh until giving them as a Christmas gift?

I am going to have roses delivered to my house, then hand deliver those roses to my girlfriend on Christmas. Since the flower delivery service doesn't deliver on Christmas, I am having them delivered early on the 24th....how can I keep these roses nice and fresh so they won't be wilted or withered when I present them to my girlfriend on Christmas?
