Is it possible to add Birthdays or other Apps to the panel on the left of home screen?

I would like to add a direct link to the Birthday app in the display on the left of the home screen. This will make it simpler for members to find the birthdays list and use it. As it is now, you must first select Applications and then the BD one to access them.
